Williams hires Wurz for the better

21 February 2012, 17:24

England - Austrian Alex Wurz has been hired by the Williams Formula 1 team as mentor to young drivers Bruno Senna and Pastor Maldonado.

Wurz raced for Williams in 2007, 10 years after his debut with Benetton, and has a wealth of experience as a tester and reserve driver for McLaren.

The 38-year-old said the appointment, which will start at this week's second pre-season tests in Barcelona, Spain, "highlights just how hard the team is pushing to optimise its performance"

LEAST-EXPERIENCED

"Throughout my career as a sportsman, which started at the age of 12 in BMX racing and includes more than a decade in F1 and is ongoing (World Endurance championship), I am lucky to have gained so much experience," he added. "I grew up in a family business of driver training and enjoy helping fellow athletes to operate at their best."

Senna and Maldonado are among the least-experienced drivers Williams has had, Senna's debut season was in 2010 with HRT and then racing for Renault as a stand-in last year.

Senna has replaced compatriot Rubens Barrichello, F1's most experienced driver, who is now considering a future in IndyCars.

Maldonado has been in F1 for only a year and 2011 was Williams' worst season yet - ninth overall.
