47 suspects arrested over nomination chaos

Police in Nyanza province have arrested 47 people in relation to chaos that rocked the region following the disputed party nomination results.

According to Nyanza Provincial Police Officer (PPO) Joseph Ole Tito, the suspects are being held in various police stations as investigations continue.

“Most of the suspects are from Kisumu and Siaya counties where violence was highly pronounced,” said the PPO.

Ole Tito said the Nyanza security team will deal decisively with anybody planning to wreck havoc and cause tension ahead of the March 4 elections.

Ole Tito’s sentiments came in the wake of a directive by the government through public service Chief Francis Kimemia who ordered the Nyanza security team to move with speed to quell chaos and the simmering tension resulting from the party primaries.

Elsewhere, police in Kisumu are probing an aspirant for allegedly planning violence that hit parts of Kisumu over the just concluded nomination exercise.

Kisumu OCPD Musa Kongoli said the aspirant is being investigated after a cache of crude weapons were allegedly found in his vehicle.

He said police recovered 50 whips and 3 pangas in the aspirant’s vehicle.

Kongoli could not divulge the name of the aspirant as well as the post he is gunning for.

However, he said the aspirant will be charged in court once investigations are complete.
