Book on freedom fighter Bildad Kagia launched

11 March 2013, 16:43 Ngarae Elias

A book detailing the life and times of a former freedom fighter has been launched and is now on sale.

The Struggle for Freedom and Justice is a detailed biography of the late Bildad Kaggia who was among the famous ‘Kapenguria Six’ freedom heroes.

The ‘Kapenguria Six’ included Kaggia, Kenya’s first president Jomo Kenyatta, Achieng Oneko, Kung’u Karumba, Paul Ngei and Fred Kubai who were arrested at the height of the freedom struggle and taken through a four month long sham trial at Kapenguria by the colonial government.

They were then incarcerated at Lokituang and served for seven years with hard labour.

Published by Transafrica Press, the book contains details of the formation and activities of the Kenya Africa Union, Mau Mau and the first government of late president Kenyatta not previously published.

The book has been written by the late Kaggia, his deceased son Mwaganu Kaggia and a Dutch researcher Wiegert de Leeuw with former Gichugu MP Martha Karua writing its forward.

Leeuw who has worked for over 20 years in East Africa as an advisor for local governments and in rural development projects said during the launch that the book could have been published 40 years ago but that was not possible.

“Kaggia told me that his aim was to have the book published in the 1970’s but he feared it would be censored by the Kenyatta regime because of its contents,” said the author while speaking at the late Kaggia’s home in Gituura village near Kenol town in Murang’a County.

The chief guest and human rights lawyer Pheroze Nowrojee described Kaggia as one of the prime architect of today’s changing Kenya and hailed his efforts for fighting for liberation.

“There can be no true understanding of Kenya’s history since independence without the reading of this biography,” said the lawyer.

The late Kaggia is believed to be the one of those who never betrayed the spirit and cause of the Mau Mau agenda.

He died on March 7, 2005 aged 84 years, and his remains were interred at his home in Gituura village near Kenol township.

The launch was organized by the Bildad Kaggia Foundation and was also attended by close family members and friends.

The book is available in all leading bookshops countrywide and is retailing at KES 1 700 and all proceeds would go to the foundation which engages in environmental care, education enhancement as well as leadership.
