Clerk arrested over poll malpractice

05 March 2013, 15:38 Ngarae Elias

A polling clerk was on Monday arrested by police in Mwea constituency for allegedly being involved in election malpractices.

The clerk was seized at Wang'uru county council hall polling station and locked up at Wang'uru police station for interrogation.

He was allegedly caught red handed issuing two copies of ballot papers  for the seat of Governor and County Assembly Representative to voters.

According to the witnesses, the clerk was noticed giving out the ballots to unsuspecting voters by a presiding officer.

On noticing the irregularity, the presiding officer informed the police who immediately arrested the suspect and took him away.

There was drama as the police handcuffed the clerk and bundled him to the government vehicle as voters watched in disbelieve.

Area head of police Apollo Onyonyi said it was an electoral offence to issue two ballot papers for one candidate to a voter.

He said the clerk would be charged in court soon after police were through with investigations.
