Fake PPO also pretended to be a GSU officer

16 January 2013, 12:31 Wangui Joseph

The alleged police imposter Joshua Karianjahi Waiganjo on Tuesday was arraigned in a Nyeri court facing four counts of impersonation and defrauding two people off their money purporting that he was in a position to recruit their relatives into police force.

In the first count, Waiganjo was charged that on diverse dates between August 6, 2008 and October 16, 2008 in Nyeri county with intent to defraud, he falsely presented himself as a senior superintendent of police attached at G.S.U headquarters Nairobi to Daniel Kago Gachanja, that he was in a position to recruit his brother-in-law Humphrey Gichuru to join Administration Police force as a police recruit.

In second count, it was alleged that on October 10, 2008 at Kiganjo Village in Nyeri County, Waiganjo with intent to defraud obtained KES 50 000 from Daniel Kago Gachanja by falsely pretending that he would make his brother-in-law to be recruited in Administration Police force.

Iin third count, the accused was charged that on October 8, 2008 at Narumoru town in Nyeri county with intent to defraud presented to be senior superintendent of police to James  Gachioya Wambugu that he was in a position to recruit his son George Nyuma to join Administration Police force as a police officer.

Lastly, Waiganjo was charged that on October 8, 2008 at Narumoru town obtained KES 100 000 from James Gachioya Wambugu by falsely pretending that he was in a position to recruit his son into Administration Police force as a police recruit.

Waiganjo, dressed in a cream stripped long sleeved T-shirt, stood pensively behind the dock as the charges facing him were read but seemed unperturbed by their magnitude as he occasionally smiled to the court audience before pleading not guilty to all of them.

The prosecutor, Rhoda Kanyi, told the court that the accused was brought in the court under arrest warrant that was issued on November 11, 2010 in a criminal case number 290 of 2010 after he absconded to appear in court for case hearing and thus opposed any application for Waiganjo to be released on bond or cash bail.

Noting the prosecutor’s application, senior principal magistrate Shadrack Okato ordered the accused to be retained in custody until February 20, when he will appear in court for case hearing.
