Ferry accident claims 8 lives

28 January 2013, 12:22 Rodgers Buluma

A tragic accident occurred at the Kenya Ferry Services limited claiming lives of at least eight people and injuring more than 34 others.

The accident involved a truck that lost control after its brakes failed to function making the truck run uncontrollable into the ferry that was taking off for the island side.

The accident that occurred at around six in the morning saw the services at the ferry halted for the better part of the morning as people crowded the scene to check for their loved ones.

The truck driver was saved by the police after angered multitude almost unleashed their anger on him claiming that he had the chance to save the lives lost.

The collusion and confusion at the scene called for the attention of the GSU police who came in to help control the crowd.

Musa Hassan Musa, the managing director of the Kenya Ferry Services, stated that such accidents can only be avoided by letting the trucks use the long route passing through Kinango instead of using short cuts.

The injured people were admitted in Likoni district hospital, Agakhan hospital, Pandya hospital and Coast general hospital.

The truck was forced into the water at Likoni ferry crossing to ease the services of Kenya ferry as multitudes awaited to be ferried to the other side.

A similar accident at the port occurred way back in 1994 when MV Harambee ferry sank at the Mutongwe ferry crossing claiming more than 200 lives.
