Government promises to intervene and assist people displaced by floods

The government will assist hundreds of locals displaced by floods in Magarini district with food stuff and other social amenities.

Minister for Fisheries Development Amason Jefa Kingi said the government is committed in making sure that those affected ware provided with food.

He said he had communicated with the Minister for Special programs Esther Murugi who promised to visit the area as well as provide food and other basics to the affected people in the region.

“I have communicated with my colleague Minister for special programmes and she had promised that her ministry shall supply foods and other needed items in the area,” he noted.

Kingi who had toured Garashi location in his constituency at the weekend said that he learnt of the floods and displacement of his electorates through the media.

He was accompanied by Magarini District Commissioner Richard Karani and other officers from Malindi county council.

“I just learnt of the floods from the media and decided to tour this area. We will make sure that foods and other amenities are provided to the displaced locals,” he said.

Those displaced by the flush floods benefited from clean water supply, 19 cartons of cooking fat, blankets, 90 bags of rice, and mosquito nets from Coast Water Board.

He said Magarini constituency Development Fund Committee had convened a crisis meeting to discus on the same.

“Magarini constituency Development Fund Committee has already convened a crisis meeting over the issue of floods and the displacement of locals and discus the way out. Blankets, mats, food and medicines will be taken care of by CDF as well as sanitary towels,” he added.

Kingi thanked all organizations especially Red Cross which had provided nets, water and blankets to displaced people.

Last week hundreds of locals were displaced and thousands of acreages were destroyed after River Sabaki broke its banks sweeping households items displacing locals.

North Coast Region Red Cross Coordinator Musa Hassan Musa said they had provided the displaced people with blankets, water and nets among other items.
