Govt urged to increase HIV/AIDs funds

20 February 2013, 15:08 Steve Wambugu

The government has been urged to increase the funding of the National AIDs Controlling Council (NACC) so as to help the lobby group fight against the AIDs pandemic in the country.

Speaking during a forum meeting in Nakuru on Tuesday, former vise chairperson of the Kenya National Human Rights Commission Dr. Samuel Tororei said it was regrettable that despite the fact that donors contribute 87% of the NACC funding, the government of Kenya was only providing 1%.

The former chairperson said it was unfortunate that the government of Kenya was not taking cases of HIV/AIDs infections seriously, saying the leadership of the country ought to pull up their socks if Kenya wants to win the battle against the disease.

“We want the Kenya government to come out strongly and support this body in fighting the pandemic,” said Dr. Samuel.

He further noted that it was worrying that most of the HIV/AIDs infections in the world were mostly reported in the sub-Saharan Africa.

Addressing the same gathering, Medical Researcher Dr. Charles Kilel said the government has to seal all the corruption loopholes in the governance system so as to suppress the deadly pandemic.

Charles observed that corruption in the country had played a crucial role in spreading the disease adding that it was high time to bring to an end corruption in the health sector.
