Illegal Ethiopian immigrants arrested in Meru

01 January 2013, 13:42 Tony Karomo

Nine suspected Ethiopian immigrants were last Tuesday arrested at Ngusishi area of Buuri constituency in Meru County along the Isiolo - Nanyuki highway.

Buuri police boss John Ngare said the Ethiopians were arrested in a thicket after police received a tip - off by members of the public.

Ngare said the foreigners did not have genuine documents indicating where they were from at the time of arrest.

“We suspect they were traveling from Isiolo to Nairobi but somehow managed to alight between Ngusishi and Sirmoni area probably to find an alternative route before they were spotted by members of the public who then informed the police,” explained Ngare.

The OCPD noted that the crackdown on illegal immigrants is still on, adding that it will be intensified.

He urged area residents to be more vigilant and report any suspected aliens to the police to help improve security in the area and kick out illegal immigrants.

“Police officers are on high alert and we will continue with the operation to arrest those who do not have the documents required to warrant their stay in the country. The public should also be on the look out for any criminal elements within their areas,” Ngare said.

The OCPD pointed out that the operation is not aimed at punishing any particular community.

The arrest comes a month after police in Meru town arrested three Ethiopians in a Nairobi bound bus.

In October, eight Somali foreigners were arrested at the Migambo Shopping Centre in Gakoromone.

The arrests continue to raise questions over the security status along Kenyan borders following what appears to be an entrenched human trafficking syndicate.
