Illegal firearms recovered in Pokot

21 June 2012, 11:31 Joy Monday

Security forces in Pokot county have collected 171 illegal firearms in the area, efforts welcomed by Oxfam UK.

Robson Ndiema, a senior superintendent of police heading the operation said the firearms were voluntarily surrendered by the local pastoralists in the area.

“Our officers are conducting human face disarmament and we have collected 171. But lack of political will and terrain is our major challenges,” Ndiema told a team from Oxfam UK in Kapenguria

Anna MacDonald, Oxfam’s Arm control campaigner, said the transfer of Small Arms to Africa pose security and hindered poverty alleviation.
MacDonald noted actions by some African countries to check the flow of the arms in the region would reduce instability.

“The unstopped flow of arms in Africa is of great concern and has not only led to loss of lives but caused economic devastation and Oxfam welcome actions by some governments against arms proliferation," said MacDonald.

Macdonald led a team from Oxfam and ACT-Kenya to a fact-finding mission to evaluate disarmament program in Pokot County and along Kenya’s border with Uganda.

She urged States to strive to regulate the flow of the arms to tame insecurity to give way for progressive development.

MacDonald commended the government and the Pokot community for the progressive made in the recovery of the illegal guns and argued the steps would provide an opportunity to the development of the region.

Accompanied by Roselyn Mungai from the ACT-Kenya and a local leader Hezron Ripko, the Oxfam official urged local leaders to spearhead peace talks.

The official backed African countries supportive to formation of Arm Treaty scheduled in New York next month.
