Meru leaders want Muthaura reinstated

18 March 2013, 13:22 Anthony Muriuki

Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders and leaders of three lobby groups in Meru have called on the government to reinstate Francis Muthaura to his job after he was exonerated by the ICC on crimes against humanity.

This comes a few days after Gikuyu Council of Elders Chairman in Kirinyaga County Bernard Kathanga urged the government to reinstate Muthaura to assure him of his retirement benefits.

Speaking at Three Steers Hotel in Meru, Njuri Ncheke Secretary General Phares Rutere flanked by Meru Professionals Association Chairman Prof Erastus Njoka and Meru Leaders Forum Chairman Rtd Bishop Dr Lawi Imathiu said Muthaura deserves to be reinstated.

“We are very happy that Muthaura has been cleared by the ICC on the allegations of committing crimes against humanity. He deserves to resume duty because he had stepped aside pending investigations. The government should reinstate him to any position they deem fit so that he can retire honorably,” Rutere said.

He said that the elders have embarked on planning a thanksgiving ceremony to be held over the coming weekend at the Njuri Ncheke shrine to celebrate Muthaura’s freedom.

Prof Erastus Njoka who is also the Chuka University Vice Chancellor said that the news of Muthaura’s exoneration befits celebration owing to the degree of accusations.

“Muthaura is the patron of Njuri Ncheke council of elders and the Meru Professionals Association. As our mentor, we were with him in his tribulations. We knew he could not have done such things. This is why we will hold a good ceremony to declare to the whole world that he is a good man,” Prof Njoka said.

Rtd Bishop Lawi Imathiu said that they are praying for the president-elect Uhuru Kenyatta who was charged alongside Muthaura to be cleared.

“We pray and expect that the ICC will look at other cases well,” he said.
