Muite in the woods over Ksh 24 Million saga

22 February 2012, 08:58Steve Wambugu

A presidential candidate and a  prominent Constitutional lawyer risks being struck out from the bar for failing to refund more than Sh 24 million to his clients.

The Advocates Complaints Commission has written to Presidential candidate Paul Muite  accusing him of “failed, refused, ignored and neglected constant reminders to refund to a purchaser the Sh 24, 110,000.”

The complaint was raised by a rights activist lobby group on behalf of Mwana Mwireri Rironi and Naivasha Farmers Company.

The commission sought explanation over complaints that sometimes in 1993 through Waruhiu and Muite Advocates Company he was allegedly contracted to purchase some 11,000 acres of land in Laikipia.

“The purchaser further alleges that at all material times you knew that the vendor was not in a position to sell to the buyer the above mentioned piece of land,” the commission chairman wrote while issuing a 30 day notice on January 3.

The complaint lodged by Kenya National Organisation for Victims of Ethnic Clashes who were pursuing the matter on behalf of the aggrieved farmers.

According to correspondences in regard to the matter dated January 3, 2012, the money owed to the farmers was part of a Sh 60 million land sale agreement for a property known as Segera/Mukenya ranch.

A In one of Mr Muite’s reply letters to the farmers complaints through Athi Holdings Limited he wrote to the land buying company to explain that “I have every explanation that this money will be refunded to you on or before  4th June, 1997.”
