Security has become one of the major requirements man will always go for. Many private security companies have sprung up in our cities employing young job seeking Kenyans.

After employment an individual expects to enjoy his/her sweat after a month’s long service.

In Mombasa, many young and aged guards employed by these companies have no reason to be laughing all the way home due to the inhuman treatment they get in these companies.

My findings in most of these companies has it that many offer a month’s salary of not more than KES. 4,500 without anything in the name of allowance. In addition a guard works for more than twelve hours a day.

Other ordeals they face are No offs, No proper protection, No leaves and any amenities that are in the policies of ILO. This has been a cry of many compared to the risks these good citizens are exposed to.

Real life

I had an interview with one Msimba a security guard with one of the companies offering security services and he shared with me his ordeal when his wife gave birth.

Msimba says he was not able to be provided with a leave to attend to his frail wife who couldn’t do anything. Instead he was told,he can quit the job to attend to his wife.

It was very difficult for this poor man to serve his family and the company but God gave his the strength and everything came to normal. Despite all these Msimba says many of these companies pay their workers very late past tenth at times some go to beyond 15th.

This is very serious having a very unfriendly economic situation. These kind of situations may result into compromised integrity resulting into a huge loss as these guards take care of very expensive materials and properties. It is therefore very important for the government to intercept to avert the grievances of these  people. It will help to curb industrial abuses people see.
