Police Boss urged to curb conflicts in Laikipia

31 December 2012, 13:48 James Kabotia

A parliamentary aspirant in the newly formed Laikipia North constituency has urged the Inspector General of police David Kimaiyo to intervene and solve conflicts among various communities in the area.

Mathew Lempurkel who is also the Laikipia county ODM branch chairman urged the government to tour Laikipia North and address the disputes emanating from the Samburu, Maasai, Pokot and Turkana communities.

“Cattle raids have continued taking a heavy toll in this district and the government is entitled to protect its citizens. We therefore appeal to the IG to come here and settle these problems at once,” said Lempurkel.

Lempurkel was speaking at a public rally in Ngare Ng’iro where he promised to eradicate cattle rustling if elected MP in Laikipia North.

Lempurkel also said that if elected, he will ensure that everyone acquires quality education since education is the only solution to cattle rustling.

The ODM member said that he will provide more job opportunities and education facilities in the region so as to wipe away poverty and some oppressive cultures like FGM.

Lempurkel further continued that he is in full support of PM Raila Odinga and believes that he will become the fourth President of Kenya after the March 4 2013 General elections.

“ODM is the party to watch and you will face it rough at the ballot if you are not in ODM,” he said.

The Laikipia North Parliamentary seat has attracted more other five contestants namely; Peter Kilesi, Joseph Shuel, C. Leyagu, J. Letai and Dr. Leina.

Lempurkel is the only aspirant who is battling it out for the seat on an ODM ticket in the constituency.

According to the IEBC, Laikipia North residents will now vote for their respective ward representatives and MP.

Their wards consist of Sosian, Segera, Mugogodo West and Mugogodo East.

Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiujuri is currently manning both Laikipia East and North constituency but after the next General Elections, the two districts will run independently in both political and administrative positions.
