Police want better working conditions

20 February 2013, 16:07 Kelvin Mureithi

Police officers from Tharaka police station in Tharaka/Nithi County are now demanding for better working conditions after termites and ants brought down the over 100 years old wooden structure that had been serving as ‘a Police Station.'

The structure built by colonialists to serve as the DO’s office those days could not withstand the termite invasion which also left many criminal and traffic offenses files destroyed.

According to the Meru South OCPD Kizito Muturo, the isolated conditions of Tharaka police station posses a big challenge to the officers while carrying out their duties since it exposes them to health and security hazards.

The OCPD was also concerned about the proximity of the cells to the armory saying if suspects broke in and stole weapons, it could be very catastrophic.

“In case there is an explosion in the armory, all the suspects will die,” he added.

The OCPD is now appealing to the Inspector General David Kimaiyo, the Deputy IG in charge of Regular Police Grace Kaindi and all security agencies to help put up modern police station for officers to effectively carry out their mandate.
