Guards decry poor working conditions

08 February 2013, 13:25 Oduor Omondi

Security guards working for a private security firm in Kisumu are up in arms over poor working conditions and terms of service.

Riley Falcon Security Services Limited (RFSL) guards have accused the firm’s management of underpaying them and failing to remit their deductions to the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).

The guards, who sought anonymity for fear of reprisal, said they are not able to access medical care in health facilities despite their monthly salary deductions.

“We are never given leave and the amount we are paid as monthly salary cannot cater for our needs due to the tough economic times,” said one guard.

When contacted, the RFSL managing director Tobias O. See denied the allegations pointing out that some employees are not following the right channel to air their grievance.

“The NHIF money that is being deducted monthly is remitted to their offices and the right way to deal with this is for them to make a follow up because our main mandate is to comply with the rules set by the public health department,” he stated.

He further refuted claims that the guards do not get leave noting that they are entitled to pro rata leave which goes for two days with those who work for 12 months getting between 21 and 30 days leave.
