Tana: Baby fights to survive

A nine months old girl who survived Tana River tribal clash between Pokomo and Orma community on Friday last week that left over 40 people dead and scores injured at Kipao village her life is in danger.

Ageiyo Abdi is nursing head injuries which she sustained during the Friday morning attacks executed by Pokomo youths to Orma communities in Kipao at Tawfiq private hospital in Malindi.

According to the hospital management, they were forced to refer her to Mombasa for more treatment.

The girl's mother died during the attack as she tried to cover her daughter from the youths who were armed with machetes,bows,spears and guns before she was rescued later by residents who came during the confusion.

At the hospital wailing in pain the minor is being nursed by her grand mother Rukia Dido.

"Her condition is becoming worse compared to the last two days, she is always crying in pain and doctors have said she is in critical condition and that she needs to be referred to Mombasa for more treatment we are still waiting to be cleared," said Dido.

She said the girl's father survived the attacks and he is at Kipao village trying to come in terms with the brutal incident.

Abdi is among other 12 patients who were admitted at Tawfiq hospital in Malindi on Friday evening who were in critical condition but are currently out of danger with two of them having been discharged.

Fourteen other survivors were admitted at The Star private hospital in Malindi and according to the hospital management they are improving with four of them having been discharged.

Other survivors of the attack who were admitted at Malindi district hospital on Friday were later discharged and are nursing their wounds at homes of their friends and relatives in the area.

Meanwhile police in Tana River country are conducting massive crackdown aimed at arresting all people who participated in the deadly act, already 56 youths have been arrested and AK-47s and assortment of crude weapons recovered in the area.

Among the arrested is former GSU officer who is also closely connected with the attacks as police said to be tracing a certain politician in the area also in connection to the inhuman act.

Tana River district commissioner David Kiprop said the crackdown which is led by officer commanding GSU operation in the area Anthony Kamitu will continue until all suspects are brought to book.

The arrested youths were found with body injuries which they are suspected to have sustained during the raid which saw about 12 of the raiders killed.

They are expected to appear in court today to face charges of murder.
