Teacher flees after defiling minor

31 January 2013, 16:25 Alloys Musyoka

Ministry of education and provincial administration in Magarini district are looking for a primary school teacher who allegedly defiled his class eight pupil at Baricho primary school.

The teacher Mako Kazungu Hare is said to have lured the 15 year old minor and sexually assaulted her several times since last year before she confessed to her pastor.

According to the Baricho SDA church pastor Ben Maroko, the minor revealed the affairs after which he tried to intervene and inquired from the girl what had been going on between the two.

"She told me that they had on several times had affairs and then we made the report to her parents and later to the police and the children officer in Magarini where she launched complaint against the teacher," he said.

Pastor Maroko told media in Malindi that the teacher tried to compromise the parents of the minor but it was too late because tests conducted on the girl confirmed that she had been having affairs with the suspect.

He said the suspect disapeared from the area and went hiding up to date after he discovered that police were after him.

According to Magarini district education Stephen Abere, the suspect is being traced by police so that he can be arrested and taken to court.

Abere said that such cases are rampant in the area.

He also revealed that the cases are so rampant that the number of school dropout and early pregnancy cases has gone up.

Last year, Abere said there were over 1 000 pregnancy cases of pupil between class three to class eight including 150 of the 2012 KCPE candidates.

"This is happening even as non-governmental organizations and ministry of education together with provincial administration is stressing and sensitizing locals on the importance of girl child education.

He said those affected are between 13 years and 18 years.

The education officer stated that most of the cases involve boda boda operators while others involve the elderly as well as fellow pupils.

"There is one big problem which has led to all this - children are attending night discos during burial ceremonies which last a week and especially during the long holidays like December, August and April," he added.

According to the officer, high poverty level in the area also contribute towards this problem.

However, he said they are doing all their best to address the issue by sensitizing locals on the importance of girl child education and arresting those behind such cases to serve as a lesson to others.
