Tycoon denies media attack

26 December 2012, 13:00 Tony Karomo

A Meru based tycoon Mike Mutembei has denied claims that he was behind the attack of two journalists in Meru by Matatu touts early this week.

Speaking yesterday in his rural home in Mikinduri Mutembei disputed the allegations saying he only came to their rescue after a crowd of rowdy Matatu operators in Mikinduri market in Tigania East District attacked them claiming they were filming on their vehicles.

I was at Mikinduri market on my way to Meru town when I saw a group of Matatu operators shouting and beating the journalists who were on their duty and because I knew them I urgently called the police from Mikinduri Police station who rescued them since the touts were armed with all sorts of crude weapons,” said Mutembei.

Mutembei who is also the patron of Meru County Youths Network added that the Meru based journalists, Jeff Mwangi of NTV, and Rose Nyawira of Kameme Fm later recorded statement with the police alleging he had hired goons to attack them.

He however threatened to move to court to challenge the allegation saying the two journalists were politicaly influenced to taint his name.

I have already authorized my lawyer to file the defamation case against me by the two local journalists because I think they are only out to mud-sling me,” said Mutembei.

Mwangi and Nyawira were on a duty to cover how the the matatus flying the Meru-Mikinduri route flout the traffic rules.
