Uhuru refuses to endorse

06 November 2012, 12:43 Joseph Mukubwa

Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta has said that he will not support or endorse any aspirant for the gubernatorial seat.

Uhuru said that he will only support whoever will win and having been fairly elected by the majority during the TNA nominations.

Speaking in Nyeri town where he met over 100 councilors and aspirants from Laikipia and Nyeri Counties, he reiterated that TNA nominations would be free and fair and there is no ''preferred candidates'' in the party.

He said that, it is the people who will decide by voting and added that he too is an aspirant for the presidency.

Uhuru urged leaders to understand competition as the nature of politics.

“My call for a strong and democratic nation is due to my belief that this is the road to national unity and reconciliation,” he added.

He was accompanied by MPs Ephraim Maina and Nemesyus Warugongo.

Others were Nyeri County Council chairman Wachira Maina Ken and Nyeri mayor Edward Muteru and Nyeri Golf Club chairman Daniel Wamahiu.

Earlier, as Kieni MP Nemesyus Warugongo and some aspirants were locked out of the meeting hall, chaos nearly erupted despite the fact that it was a councilors meeting.

Other TNA supporters mobbed the DPM when he was about to address them forcing him to climb on top of a vehicle where he addressed them safely.

The DPM while accepting several councilors who defected from other parties and joined TNA added that divisive politics of the past must not be allowed to drag the country back.

He asked the leaders to plan three days when he would tour Nyeri and Laikipia counties.

Maina said he abandoned APK party in response to Uhuru's call for unity, adding that this is the ''path to national unity.''

While speaking on behalf of the councilors from the two counties, Wachira Ken said they have all together joined TNA .

He said that ,many including himself were in various parties which claim to support the DPM outside TNA, but pointed out that they have now resolved to back him ''fully and from the inside''.

They supported Kenyatta and TNA’s clarion call for free and fair nominations, saying this attracts most Kenyans to the party.
