Voters accuse UDF party of malpractice

18 January 2013, 11:41 Rodgers Buluma

United Democratic Forum (UDF) party had a hard time in Mombasa following allegations that it had offered direct nomination certificates to selected members.

Members of the public streaming into the polling stations to nominate their desired aspirants were astonished after they were informed that no ballot boxes had been allocated for their party.

The party was also accused of failing to send letters seeking permission to use the selected nomination venues.

Speaking to the media at Ushindi Baptist Church, Mike Osala who was to participate in the nominations of Timbwani as a ward representative said that the party chairman in Mombasa region was seen in a hotel the day before the nominations and that it is doubted that the nomination certificates were offered that time.

In his statement, Mike Osala said that he was confident he would win, but was side-placed in a rather disturbing way.

He decided to call the party chairman in Mombasa but did not get a satisfactory answer for he was told to be patient as the ballot boxes were to be brought on board, something that never happened.

He was surprised when his opponent came boasting that he had been given a walkover, with reports saying that his opponent Osaya had stepped down.

In a police statement, it was confirmed that police had not received any report confirming UDF nominations in Timbwani ward.

Further inquiries were barred after the chairman decided to put off his phone cutting short any communications.
